Application Job Letter?

An application job letter (also called a job application letter or cover letter) is a formal letter you submit along with your resume. It tells the employer why you’re applying, why you’re suitable, and how you align with the company or role.

Think of it as a one-page conversation where you convince the hiring manager you’re not just another CV—they should meet you.

What to Include in a Strong Application Job Letter

1. Header and Greeting

  • Your contact details (top right or top centre)

  • Date

  • Employer’s name, designation, and company address

  • Greeting: “Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name]” – if you don’t know the name, “Dear Hiring Manager” works

2. Opening Paragraph

  • Mention the job role and where you found it

  • Briefly express your interest

  • Example:
I’m writing to apply for the position of Marketing Associate as advertised on Naukri.com. With a passion for storytelling and two years of hands-on experience in digital campaigns, I believe I can bring fresh energy to your brand.

3. Middle Paragraph(s)

  • Highlight your skills and achievements (not a copy-paste of your resume)

  • Tailor it to the company’s needs

  • Use specific examples

  • Mention relevant tools or platforms you’ve used (e.g., Canva, Tally, Google Ads)

4. Closing Paragraph

  • Express willingness to attend an interview

  • Thank them for considering your application

  • Mention attached resume

5. Signature

  • Use “Sincerely” or “Best regards”

  • Add your name

  • Optional: LinkedIn or Fitmyjob

A Real Application Job Letter Example (for a Sales Role in India)

Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to express my interest in the Sales Executive position at Delight Foods, as listed on Indeed. With over three years of experience in retail sales and a track record of exceeding quarterly targets by 25%, I am confident in my ability to contribute meaningfully to your team.

In my previous role at Big Bazaar, I handled a portfolio of FMCG products and led promotional campaigns during festive seasons. My understanding of local customer behaviour, coupled with my data-driven approach using tools like Zoho CRM, helped boost in-store conversions.

Delight Foods’ focus on regional products resonates with my own belief in local-first retail strategies. I would be proud to represent a brand that supports Indian farmers and artisans.

Thank you for considering my application. I’ve attached my resume and am available for an interview at your convenience.

Sincerely,
Arun Shetty

  • Attach a letter with grammar mistakes—run a spell check or use Grammarly

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a job letter if I’m uploading a resume?

How formal should I be?

Keep it professional but not robotic. You can sound human and still maintain respect. Avoid slang or overly casual tone.

What if I don’t know the recruiter’s name?

Use “Dear Hiring Manager” or the team name like “Dear HR Team”. Avoid “To whom it may concern”—that feels outdated.

Can I use the same letter for every job?

No. Always tweak the letter to fit the job and company. Generic letters are easy to spot and usually ignored.
